PIPER ARIEL BELL
B.A., B.A. (Hons), M.Ed (Research), PhD (current)

Piper’s academic background is in political philosophy, feminism and activism. Her published research spans topics such as academic governance, exploitative and precarious work and student power. Her current PhD research, through the University of Queensland, focuses on academic women’s labour through the lenses of historical materialism and social reproduction theory. The research examines the intersections of class, gender and race in academic work, illuminating the multiple forms of exploitation faced by working-class women and the social relations and institutional structures that simultaneously devalue and depend on women’s productive and reproductive work in the capitalist academy.Piper has lectured across philosophy, sociology and education for over 10 years, and has been recognised with two Teaching Excellence Awards. She has led initiatives to enhance student engagement and representation in university governance at an international level through her previous coordination of the Student Voice Australasia network (through the University of Adelaide). She has worked across multiple research projects and grants and in 2019 developed and coordinated the pilot of the Military Academic Pathway Program, a national first in higher education. She is also the Reviews Editor for Transnational Literature (Bath Spa) and an editorial board member for the Canadian Journal of Educational and Social Studies.
